The arrival of a new baby is an unforgettable event for the family, especially for the mother. The environment and facilities in which the baby is received, along with the multidisciplinary team determines the satisfaction of the new mom, before and after childbirth.
Thinking on the well-being of both mother and baby, Damas Hospital in Ponce now offers a modern infant unit, equipped with the highest technology. The new facilities which were opened recently, are the result of an investment of more than $2 million.
We have available eight rooms for the process before delivery, four delivery rooms and four for the post-partum recovery, are part of the offer of the new unit. In addition, a surgical room for obstetric emergencies, for faster access, if necessary.
"The large number of births attended each month at the hospital led us to the modernization of these facilities," according to Edwin Sueiro, the hospital administrator.
Sueiro stressed that "the new rooms complement the excellent service that for years Damas has offered the community of Ponce and the South of Puerto Rico". He added that "since 1863, the first choice for the families from ponce has been the Damas Hospital". Meanwhile Dr. Armando J. Collazo, Director of the Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the hospital, noted that in an alliance with the Ponce School of medicine, now Damas Hospital has psychology services tailored to motherhood. "This is a service that only we are offering. “As soon as one of our patients indicates it, we activates protocol to attend it", said Dr. Collazo.
On the other hand Dr. Collazo emphasized the importance of the integration of the neonatologist medical team during delivery, ensuring the best result.
"We are the only hospital that has a service of Neonatology available 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, covering units of intensive neonatal and pediatric", said the doctor.
Damas Hospital in Ponce has been serving Puerto Rico for more than 150 years.
